Sabratha Spa
The Spa at Sabratha was an opportunity to design a a substantial building, of high quality, using traditional materials. The Client site was adjacent to the ruins of the great ruined city of Sabratha, so great care was required in developing a scheme which would damage the context of the World Heritage Site. We chose to construct the 66,000 sq ft Spa Complex in Nubian weathered sandstone. The building was designed with plain Islamic arches and limited fenestration to reduce glare, heat gain and provide privacy for guests.
Internally we used the opportunity to recreate a Roman baths experience with calderiums, Tepidarium, and frigidarium. The complex had a series of leisure and bathing pools with separate facilities for men and women.
